Opposition between Art and Reality in Shakespeares The Tempest Essay

Restriction among Art and Reality in The Tempest   â â The Tempest is a self-reflexive play that investigates the limits of craftsmanship and reality. Shakespeare's island is a domain constrained by the craftsman figure; where the breathtaking, the perfect and the innovative are introduced as both fanciful and obvious, and where the crowd is held in a vague express, an unusual rest. The juxtaposition of the universe of workmanship with political and social real factors investigated by delegate characters is the focal difference of the play, and is foregrounded by the utilization of non-verbal methods. These procedures permit the crowd to value the craftsmanship that encourages the display they watch, just as comprehend that the perfect stays a deceptive state encroached on by worries of this present reality. This differentiation doesn't resolve itself; rather, it stays uncertain and leaves us, as indicated by Russ McDonald, in a minor condition among desire and getting, certification and wariness, parody and catastrophe.  The initial tempest scene speaks to the breakdown of all the thoughtfulness and social request of the known world. The adequacy of the tempest is made conceivable by the opening blustery commotion of thunder and lightning which pre-empts the occasions to come. The tempest quickly slings the peruser into a comprehension of the characters on board the boat. It opens us to the manner by which the characters' social presumptions surrender when they are presented to affliction; and leads us to expect that on their appearance on the island they will be changed. Be that as it may, a remarkable opposite is valid - in the second demonstration we are given men who show up significantly More passionately political since they are liberated from havin... ...tion among workmanship and the truth is grown all the while by discourse and a progression of non-verbal methods.  Works Cited and Consulted Alan Durband. The Theory of the Canadian Politics Free Essays

Power and control is what the Canadian government try†s to establish. Government engagement in business is becoming too strong as â€Å"in 1992, 6 of Canada†s 100 largest corporations were operated by, government or government agencies throughout Canada†, (Canadian Democracy pg. 88). We will write a custom essay sample on The Theory of the Canadian Politics or any similar topic only for you Order Now The problem with government control in business is that it restricts sole proprietors from investing in certain aspects of business such as Ontario†s liquor industry. In order to restrict government control of business three issues need to be taken into consideration; laws allowing privatization on crown corporations, more government attention establishing social issues that are out of reach to Canadian entrepreneurs for example education and health care. Furthermore incorporated laws need to be developed in order to minimize government control. As Canada moves into the 20th century economic policies are becoming too government controlled and as a result of this Canada is leaning towards a government run bureaucracy. Minimal government control of Canada†s business will contribute significantly to a more prosperous Canadian economy. Which is why it is important for government control to be minimal and allow for privatization of crown corporations. In Ontario liquor sales are down 22% compared to a provinces such as Quebec who have a privatized liquor industry. Since Ontario currently has a greater population than Quebec, obviously liquor sales are higher due to privatization of the industry, which allows more business to be established which makes it more convenient for the consumer to buy because there are many more liquor stores. However the liquor industry is only one of the primary companies that are government controlled. â€Å"Canadians who buy their gas at Petro Canada who watch CDC, TVO or Radio Quebec or who watch other provincial educational T. V networks, who travel Via rail or who pay electricity bills†(Canadian Democracy), are all contributing to government run alliances. To prove privatization has been successful the Quebec liquor industry, as well as the MBA programs at Universities such as Queens and McMaster are both that privatization is a success. Since the government was unable to fund such programs to it†s potential, privatization was an obligation in order to have an efficient program (statistics shown on Queens and McMaster university web pages). Students in the MBA programs at these schools agree that privatization was effective as they now have more advanced resources to work with. Clearly facts have proven that a privatized business/program/industry, is more beneficial not only a Canadian economy but as well as society. Another problem that Canadian†s face is that the government doesn†t focus enough of his attention on social issues concerning Canadians such as; education, health care, environment, welfare, foreign inspections on imports and Income tax. Many of Canada†s collage and university students are moving to the United States because the job opportunities are more abundant and income taxes are much lower. â€Å"Because the bulk of the education is paid for by the government (taxpayers) we are effectively subsidizing US industry by providing skilled labor. Many conservative people argue that this is one reason why students should bear the entire cost of their education. This alternative would close the post-secondary door on many poor people in this country† (www. watleo. ca/~cdsmith/txs/education). An alternative is that the government should turn aside the money that they are currently paying colleges and universities into student loans. Once the student graduates and receives employment this loan could be paid back in the form of income taxes. However if the student decides to work in the US their income tax will no longer compensate for the student loan, as they will have to pay off the loan personally. This method of educational funding would increase the number of students attending post secondary education because finance is a capital reason why some students do not attend collage or university. Another issue facing the Canadian education system is private schools vs. public schools. Canadian statistics prove that students attending private schools are more likely to attend university compared to people enrolled in the public system. The government needs to offer better educational funding in order to provide additional teachers to cut class sizes, as well as more resources. These changes will decrease class size, which will offer more one on one student to teacher attention that will help students prepare for a higher education. Healthcare is another major social issue that the government needs to establish; it is important for Canada to reduce the cost of basic healthcare services. Although Canada†s healthcare administration costs are low compared to the US, the US is associated with higher levels of medical research and development as well as increased amounts of advanced equipment i. e. â€Å"the city of Philadelphia has more MRI machines than all of Canada combined†(www. watleo. uwaterloo. ca/cdsmith. health. html. com). In Canada there are many people who abuse the healthcare system, in order to stop this, government should stop charging a basic fee for medical services and offer a tax refund for those who do not use the medical service provided. This would increase the efficiency of the current universal medical system in Canada and wouldn†t cost the government any money, as the refund would be proportional to the savings, because not as many people would then use the medical system. In addition to social issues in need of government assistance, environmental funding is needed to research issues such as air pollution, water conditions, the ozone and animal habitat which is always an on going environmental issue. On the topic of environment and health, the Toronto Star reported that inspection laws associated with NAFTA need to be stricter as poisonous strawberries imported form Mexico are currently being sold in the Canadian market. The National Post is reporting that 85% of Canadians are upset by the amount of money they pay in tax. StatsCan figures released on April 14th state that Canadians incomes are not keeping pace with economic growth. â€Å"We†re all working harder than ever and we†re not seeing our take home pay rise. It†s got to stop. Governments must take action to cut taxes and increase real take home pay†(Ontario PC Party). The government also needs to flatten income taxes because each province in Canada pays a different income tax rate Quebec than BC being the highest. We could also lower our income taxes if we were to be like the US and impose income tax on inheritance and lottery winnings, which would allow government to reduce personal income tax. A further social government issue that needs to be worked on is welfare. Welfare laws need to be modified because people on welfare have no incentive to look for a job or enroll in training. Welfare fraud is a big issues in some provinces of Canada (fraud and welfare abuse cost Ontario taxpayers an estimated $100 million last year), as well Canada needs to eliminate welfare payments to jail inmates as this is contributing to the millions of dollars wasted each year. It is made clear through the facts and evidence stated why the government needs to focus more upon social issues such as welfare, taxes, education, healthcare and foreign import laws. These government run programs are out of reach to entrepreneurs. Thus Canada needs the government to concentrate and control theses issues, rather than infringing upon Canadian business and economy. Lastly Since research has proven no laws limiting legitimate government control over large companies these laws need to be established and enforced because the government already has to much control over the Canadian economy. Laws need to be created in order to monitor government control and creation of monopolies. Trough extensive research currently there were no laws found that entail government control of business. Government already has a big impact on the pass of laws so this could be why there are no laws limiting their control of business i. e. Ontario liquor, CBC, Via rail, TVO, Petro Canada etc. However the part of business the government must stay in charge of are companies that produce money, the mint, nuclear power plants, army, police forces etc. These are all government run agencies that can not be privatized due to obvious reasons. If anyone could produce money than the Canadian dollar would have no value and the Canadian economy would crash, i. e. the Russian economy. The issue concerning too much government control over business that can be run by entrepreneurs can be resolved by passing â€Å"fair† laws concerning government control over business. This law would limit the amount of control and what the government can control in the Canadian economy. In conclusion as facts have proven above Canadian economic policies are becoming too government controlled, which is resulting in a government run bureaucracy. As government monopolies are becoming to strong it begins to decrease entrepreneurial opportunities for Canadian citizens and is why all business should be privatized. If the government were to allow privatization of some industries it would allow for more job opportunity, profit and a better Canadian economy. As well the government should concentrate more on social issues concerning Canadians such as healthcare, education, taxation etc, these issues could be emphasized on more by privatizing some crown corporations. Lastly law issuing limiting government control is allowed will result in a more prosperous economy. Therefore if all of these issues are handle more efficiently as outlined than Canada†s economy will be booming and it will create more opportunity in the job market for Canadian citizens. Obesity in America

Introduction America has an obesity problem that much is certain, nearly 33% of adults within the U.S. are obese which represents a 60% increase over a 20 year period with the rate for child obesity not far behind at nearly triple what it was 30 years ago (Chappell, 2010). What these figures represent is nearly 300,000 deaths a year from obesity related illnesses and maladies, billions of dollars spent on health problems such as high cholesterol, diabetes, high blood pressure etc (Obesity in America, 2006).Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Obesity in America specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More It is a growing epidemic that is continuing to proliferate itself throughout the nation affecting not only adults but children as well. International popular culture representations of the U.S. have depicted an unflattering image of the U.S. population as being a culture for the morbidly obese with cartoonish representations of ten showing an obese man using a tiny scooter in order to line up at the nearest McDonald’s. Unfortunately this representation of the American people is closer to the truth than most people realize. Junk food is the primary contributor to the obesity problem in America due its convenience and prevalence which has resulted in the current obesity problem that Americans now face. The Age of the Junk Food Culture Junk food in the form of chips, dips, burgers, fries, sodas, candies and ice cream have become such a part of America’s culture that the most prevalent cultural distinction for American today is that of the â€Å"Junk Food† culture (Burner, n.d.). In nearly every town, city and state groceries, shopping malls and fast food restaurants carry some form of junk food that is rapidly consumed by a voracious public that enjoys the taste and convenience of such products. Unfortunately, this cultural distinction is actually slowly killing the American population du e to resulting effects such food types have one the body. The recommended daily allowance of nutritional calories that a body should have in a single day as recommended by the American Medical Association is roughly 2,500 to 3,000 calories a day (Burner, n.d.). The problem with junk food is that due to their convenience and serving size most people aren’t away that on average they consume more than 3,000 calories a day from the various forms of junk food they eat (Menifield et al., 2008). An average adult male in the U.S. should consume only 65 grams of fat and 2,500 calories in a single day yet a burger and fries combo meal with a large coke available at the local McDonald’s is equivalent to more than 50 grams of fat and 1500 calories within a single sitting (Menifield et al., 2008).Advertising Looking for essay on health medicine? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More This would not be a problem should that be the o nly large meal they eat throughout the day however this meal is supplemented by various chips, sodas and various other unhealthy options throughout the day which brings the total calorie count to 4,000 calories or more. The Human Body and Excess Consumption On average the human body only requires 2,000 to 2,500 calories within a single day to properly function any excess calories is usually stored as fat by body for future use. With diets often exceeding the daily allotted calories needed by the body this results in a large proportion of the consumed calories to be turned into fat (Obesity in America, 2006). Not only that habits developed early on in childhood have been shown to carry well into adulthood. As such children who are currently overweight now will be at risk for obesity as they grow older (Chappell, 2010), K. (2010). It is the combination of these factors that are behind the current problems regarding obesity in the U.S. today. Obesity and Popular Culture While many peop le state that an obese person becomes that way by choice this paper states that they are made that way due to external influences that affects their ability to think. On average nearly 10,000 TV ads appear within a given year which focus on promoting the products of various restaurants and companies (Burner, n.d.). Children in particular are targeted by fancy commercials advertising sugary sweets through the use of cleverly crafted cartoonish elements in the commercial itself. Since TV advertisements are an extension of popular culture it can be seen that popular culture is one of the primary reasons behind the obesity problem America now faces due to this patronage of products that are not only unhealthy but cause people to become obese as a result of their consumption (Burner, n.d.). The power of advertising should not be underestimated since it has been shown that TV ads are one of the best ways to convince people to buy a certain product. From this it can be seen that the causes behind obesity is not merely the fast food culture that Americans find themselves in but also the actions of various corporations that promote with wild abandon their products without taking into consideration the possible ramification on the population. Conclusion Based on the given information it can be seen that while junk food is behind the current obesity problem in the U.S. it is not the only cause.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Obesity in America specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More The unmitigated marketing practices employed by various corporations that seek to influence Americans to buy their products is actually a prime contributing factor to the problem of obesity that America now faces due to its prevalence in popular culture which influences people to such an extent that it causes them to buy the products of these companies. The combination of these factors is actually the primary reason behind the prevalence of obesity and as such they must be controlled in order to prevent the problem of obesity from getting worse. Their love story was an example of unconditional love because despite of the fact that there were no priest who was willing to marry the them, the couple exchanged their vows before God in their own way. Their love bear its fruit Josephine was pregnant. Unfortunately, Josephine gave birth to a one-month premature baby boy who lived only for three hours. The child was buried in Dapitan, bearing the name Francisco, after Rizals father. I got mad with Jose Rizal in the event of Josephines premature birth of the supposedly son of a hero. How come Rizal who was a doctor was so unmindful of Josephines condition that night when his anger bursted after Marias accusation of Josephine being a spy? Not only physically but mentally and emotionally, Josephine who was then pregnant was tortured of Rizals misbehavior which caused her to collapse and ultimately lose the baby in her womb. I can imagine how Rizals life would be more colorful and interesting if he had a son who lived and continued his good doings. It is really disappointing that losing that baby ends Rizals direct lineage. If he was not a hero, he would have been long forgotten because his direct ancestry ended when he was killed. However, I believe without a doubt that he really deserves to be our national hero in every mans point of view. People in Dapitan looked up to him, adored and respected him. The young ones had the passion to follow him, learn what he has to teach and follow what he has to instruct. He established a school in Dapitan which was attended by 16 young boys from prominent families. Instead of charging them for the matriculation, he made the students do community projects for him like maintaining his garden and field. He taught them reading, writing in English and Spanish, geography, history, mathematics, industrial work, nature study, morals and gymnastics. He encouraged his students to engage in sports activities to strengthen their bodies as well. There was no formal room, like the typical classroom nowadays. Classes were conducted from 2 p. m to 4 p. m. with the teacher sitting on a hammock while the students sat on a long bamboo bench but still the students spirits were so solid to learning. Rizal also definitely wins my admiration for his being a doctor in that primitive era with limited tools and medicines. He really was good. As a physician, Rizal provided free medicine to his patients, most of them were underprivileged. However, he also had wealthy patients who paid him well enough for his excellent surgical skill. Among them were Don Ignacio Tumarong who gave Rizal 3000 pesos for restoring his sight, an Englishman who gave him 500 pesos, and Aklanon haciendero, Don Francisco Azcarraga, who paid him a cargo of sugar. His skill was put into test in August 1893 when his mother, Dona Teodora Alonzo, was placed under opthalmic surgery for the third time. The operation was a success, however, Alonzo, ignored her sons instructions and removed the bandages in her eyes which lead to irritation and infection. When Dr. Pio Valenzuela came to Dapitan, I thought we would be of a great support to Rizals undertakings and missions but it was disheartening to later on realize that his visit would just endager Pepe. Prior to the outbreak of the revolution, the Katipunan leader, Andres Bonifacio, seek the advise of Jose Rizal. In a secret meeting on May 2, 1896 at Bitukang Manok river in Pasig, the group agreed to send Dr. Pio Valenzuela as a representative to Dapitan who will inform Rizal of their plan to launch a revolution against the Spaniards. On board the steamer Venus, Valenzuala left Manila on June 15, 1892 and in 6 days, arrived at Dapitan with a blind companion, Raymundo Mata. At night, Rizal and Valenzuela had a talk in the formers garden. There, Valenzuela told him of the Katipunans plan. Regarding this, Rizal outspokenly objected Bonifacios premature idea for two reasons: 1. the Filipinos were still unready for such bloody revolution; and 2. he Katipunan lacked machinery before plotting a revolution, there must be sufficient arms and funds collected. Valenzuela also told Rizal of their plan to rescue him in Dapitan. Again, the exiled hero disagreed because he had no plan of breaking his word of honor to the Spanish authorities. This reality was presented to the court but was ignored. But prior to keeping Rizal in captive by the government, was his sad farewell to Dapitan. At midnight of July 31, 1896, he left Dapitan on board the steamer Espana, ogether with Narcisa, Josephine, Angelica (Narcisas daughter), three nephews and six of his students. Many were saddened as the adopted son of Dapitan left. In Cebu, on their way to Manila, Rizal successfully performed an opthalmic operation to a merchant who paid him fifty silver pesos. After almost a week, on August 6, 1896, Espana arrived in Manila. Rizal was supposedly to board the Isla de Luzon for Spain, but unfortunately, left ahead of time. Instead, he was transferred to the Spanish cruiser Castilla to stay and wait for the next mail boat that woul sail for Spain next month. He was prohibited from leaving the vicinity but was allowed to accept visitors so long as they were his immediate family. Of course, all these delays were part of the drama Rizal has now fallen to the critical/deadly Spanish trap. Before Rizals final moment in Bagumbayan were court proceedings. On one of these moments where he spoke of Education and NOT rebellion as his weapon to liberating the country and the people from the Spanish tyranny, and as far I know, Rizal had perfectly became triumphant in his objective especially these days where Filipinos are known worldwide of being well educated.

Wind Gust Definition and Causes

Wind Gust Definition and Causes A wind gust is a sudden, seconds-long burst of high-speed wind thats followed by a lull. Whenever you see wind gusts in your forecast, it means the National Weather Service has observed or expects wind speeds to reach at least 18 mph, and the difference between the peak winds and the lulls to vary by 10 mph or more.  A related phenomenon, a squall, is (according  to the National Weather Service), A strong wind characterized by a sudden onset in which the wind speed increases at least 16 knots and is sustained at 22 knots or more for at least one minute. Why Does the Wind Gust? There are a number of things that disturb wind flow and make its speed vary, including friction and wind shear. Whenever winds path is obstructed by objects such as buildings, mountains, or trees, it hugs the object, friction increases, and the wind slows. Once it passes the object and flows freely again, the speed increases rapidly (gusts).  Ã‚   When wind travels through mountain passes, alleys, or tunnels, the same amount of air is forced through a smaller pathway which also causes an increase in speed or gusts. Wind shear (a change in wind speed or direction along a straight line) can also lead to gusting. Because winds travel from high (where theres more air piled up) to low pressure, you can think of there being more pressure behind the wind than in front of it. This gives the wind a net force and it accelerates in a rush of wind. Maximum Sustained Winds Wind gusts (which last only a few seconds) make it hard to determine the overall wind speed of storms whose winds dont always blow at constant speeds. This is especially the case for tropical cyclones and hurricanes. To estimate the overall wind speed, the wind and wind gusts are measured over some period of time (typically 1 minute) and are then averaged together. The result is the highest average wind observed within the weather event, also called the maximum sustained wind speed.   Here in the U.S., maximum sustained winds are always measured by anemometers at a standard height of 33 feet (10 m) above ground for a duration of 1 minute. The rest of the world averages their winds over a period of 10 minutes. This difference is significant because measurements averaged over just one minute are about 14% higher than those averaged over the course of ten minutes. Wind Damage High winds and gusts can do more than turn your umbrella inside out, they can cause legitimate damage. Major wind gusts can knock down trees and even cause structural damage to buildings. Wind gusts s as low as 26 mph are strong enough to cause power outages. The Highest Gusts on Record The world record for strongest wind gust  (253 mph) was observed on Australias Barrow Island during the passage of Tropical Cyclone Olivia (1996). The second highest wind gust ever recorded (and the #1 strongest ordinary gust not linked to a tropical cyclone or a tornado) occurred right here in the United States atop New Hampshires Mount Washington in 1934.

Submarine warfare :: essays research papers

Submarine Warfare It took World War I to prove the worth of submarines. Prior to that time, submarines played only a small role in the plans of fleet commanders, serving primarily only as coastal defense units. For the most part, fleet commanders ridiculed the idea that the submarine had a place in naval strategy and tactics. They believed that the submarine was only a play thing. It diverted time and money from other more useful and dependable branches of the service. This view was to suddenly change when, on 17 September 1914, the German submarine force proved the importance of undersea warfare. On that day, the German submarine U-9 spotted a cloud of smoke and penetrating masts on the horizon. As they came closer, Otto Weddigen, commanding officer of the U-9, could make out three cruisers steaming abreast at a speed of about 10 knots. Each was seperated from the others by two miles. Weddigen gave the order to dive. At 6:20 a.m., he ordered the first torpedo fired. It hit the cruiser HMS ABOUKIR, which began to list heavily. Within 25 minutes, she had capsized and sunk. ABOUKIR had been cruising with her sisters HMS CRESSY and HMS HOUGE. When ABOUKIR was rent by an explosion and sank, the commanding officers of the CRESSY and HOUGE assumed that she had struck a mine. They closed in and began rescue operations. HMS HOUGE was next to go. Two torpedoes struck her hull --sinking her in less than 10 minutes. A glimpse of the U-9's periscope suddenly m ade CRESSY's captain aware of what had occured. CRESSY tried to make a run for it. It was too late. At 7:17 a.m., Widdigen fired two more torpedoes. CRESSY rolled over on to her beam ends. Fifteen minutes later, she joined her sisters at the bottom. The news that the German submarine U-9 had attacked and sunk three British armored cruisers in the North Sea caused the entire world to sit up and take notice. Submarines were immediately given more thoughtful consideration. Germany entered World War I with but 28 submarines.

Life Is Beautiful Essay

The movie â€Å"Life is Beautiful† is a pretty funny movie, but still very touching since it deals with the Holocaust and takes place in a concentration camp. The main message is still clear even though the Holocaust is being depicted in a comedic way, which is to â€Å"never give up†. Guido, a Jewish waiter in the WWII era, is going at all lengths to win the heart of Dora, a non-Jewish school teacher. Although polite about it, she does not welcome his attempts at first that is until she gets to know him. She soon realizes that she returns his love for her, and they get married. They soon have a son, Giosue. Throughout the movie, you can see how big the love between Guido, Dora and Joshua is. They would do anything for each other. For instance, Dora gets on the train to the concentration camp to be with her husband and son knowing that the destination is horrible. She uses her freedom of choice to follow her heart at any cost and displays bravery and determination. She does not see any sense in her life without her family even though she could be safe if she had not joined the train. Guido decides to do â€Å"bad† by lying to his son about the events that have been happening in the concentration camp. He is telling his son that those Holocaust events are some sort of games. The reason why he is lying is to protect his son. Telling him that the activities in the concentration camp are a game enables Giosue to survive and cope with a situation that he is too young to understand. He somehow teaches his son a lesson about finding a way to look at even the worst situations and make the best out of them. If Giosue knew that what was actually going on, he would be terrified, he would panic and might get killed soon. Another effect of Guido’s efforts and commitments to keep up his son’s spirit is that those actions even inspire the other prisoners in the camp. They see how he is trying to give his son hope, and they eventually find hope for themselves. Everything time when Guido feels anger, he tries to hide it and substitute it with something funny for his son’s sake. He is trying to make his family live in happiness even though they were being forced in this place. Guido did his best to save his son and wife and even gives his own life at the end for them. The moral of Guido character is that even if we face difficulties in our life, we should think for a way out of it and try to make it simple and make life beautiful.
